Supermarkets across Asia are now using banana leaves instead of plastic to wrap their fruits and vegetables. While leaf-wrapping isn’t anything new in Asia, this biodegradable approach hasn’t been used in supermarkets… until now!
According to My Modern Met, Rimping Supermarket in Chiang Mai, Thailand is the first chain to hop onto this eco-friendly idea. The story went viral on Facebook after real-estate website, Perfect Homes Chiangmai posted images of this cute and sustainable packaging. The post currently has over 3.5 million views and 16,000 shares.
Other Asian supermarkets are quickly jumping onto this trend, according to NextShark. Big supermarkets in Vietnam, including Lotte Mart, Saigon Co.op, and Big C are all experimenting with banana leaves as an alternative to plastic packaging. Aside from plant products, Lotte Mart is also considering using banana leaves to wrap fresh meat.
Hopefully, other supermarkets in Asia and across the globe start to “leaf” plastic packaging alone and switch to sustainable alternatives like banana leaves.
